What Is a Knife Gate Valve?
A knife gate valve is a type of gate valve developed for fluids that contain solids and fibers. The thin, sharp-edged gate cuts fibers and solids as it closes, so the deposits that spoil sealing in conventional valves cannot hold on at the seat. In the open position the gate is fully withdrawn from the flow path and the fluid passes almost without obstruction.
These valves are normally used for isolation, meaning fully open or fully closed. Compact lugged bodies offer light, low-cost solutions, while two-piece bolted bodies with full round ports are preferred for high-pressure and highly abrasive slurries. Designs in which all wetted surfaces are protected by a replaceable polyurethane liner extend service life in abrasive and corrosive slurries.
Where standard dimensions are not sufficient, fabricated designs can be produced to the required size, port shape and material. In a fabricated design the body flanges act as a frame around the metal liner that forms the actual pressure boundary; when an expensive alloy is needed for wetted parts, a lower-cost material is sufficient for the frame. This flexibility is an important advantage for special processes and large lines.
How Does a Knife Gate Valve Work?
The valve opens and closes as the gate moves up and down along guides in the body. Motion is provided by a handwheel, gearbox, chainwheel or pneumatic, hydraulic and electric actuators.
1. Open position: The gate is fully raised; the port is open and the fluid passes without obstruction.
2. Closing and cutting: As the gate descends, its sharp edge cuts solids and fibers in the fluid; guides and wedges support the gate and lead it to the seat.
3. Seating: The gate seats. Depending on elastomer, polyurethane, RTFE or metal seat type, one- or two-directional shutoff is achieved.
4. External sealing: The gate passes through the gland box; a gate scraper and packing layers prevent leakage to atmosphere.
Seat and shutoff types
Compact lugged valves offer RTFE, FKM or metal seats and one-directional shutoff; the version with a bonded polyurethane seat gives bidirectional flow and shutoff. Fabricated valves use a bidirectional perimeter seal in the resilient-seated version, and a bevelled gate that shears through solids with a metal seat in the other version. The high-pressure slurry valve provides true bidirectional flow and shutoff with a molded urethane seat and is tested to a Class V leakage limit.
Design approaches for abrasive slurry
Discontinuities in port geometry direct flow toward the pipe wall and increase turbulence and wear. In a full round port design the port can be matched to the pipe bore and leaves no obstruction in the flow path, reducing wear on the valve and on downstream piping and equipment. Replaceable and rotatable flow rings make it easier to renew worn surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a knife gate valve do?
A knife gate valve provides isolation on slurry, fibrous, powder and solids-laden lines. Its sharp-edged gate cuts solids and fibers as it closes and then seats. In the open position the gate stays outside the flow path, so the fluid passes almost unobstructed and pressure loss is low.
Do knife gate valves give bidirectional shutoff?
It depends on the model. Standard compact lugged valves are one-directional. Lugged valves with a bonded polyurethane seat, high-pressure slurry valves with a molded urethane seat and valves with a replaceable polyurethane liner provide bidirectional flow and shutoff. Installation direction should follow the features of the selected model.
Which knife gate valve suits high-pressure slurry?
For oil sands processing, tailings lines and similar duties that combine high pressure with strong abrasion, two-piece bolted designs with full round ports in ASME Class 300 are suitable. These valves are offered in NPS 3–48, tested to a Class V leakage limit and use a live-loaded packing arrangement.
Can packing be replaced with the valve in line?
Yes, on many models the packing can be replaced without removing the valve from the line. Line pressure must be relieved and hazardous media drained first. Staggering the joints of the packing layers is important for sealing. Designs that need no special tools or packing materials shorten maintenance time.
What is the benefit of a polyurethane-lined knife gate valve?
A replaceable polyurethane liner protects all wetted surfaces of the valve against abrasive and corrosive slurries. When the liner wears it can be replaced in the field, so the body is reused. A high-temperature liner option is also available. This design improves reliability and service life.
Can knife gate valves be made in non-standard sizes?
Fabricated versions can be produced in the required size and configuration. The standard range is NPS 2–24, and larger sizes up to NPS 144 can be designed depending on the application. Round, square or rectangular ports, one- or two-directional designs and a wide range of weldable alloys can be selected.
