In response to customer demand and the Dark Sky Initiative, which promotes the reduction of light pollution, DeTect developed the HARRIER™ Aircraft Detection Lighting System (ADLS). The system automatically activates aviation obstruction lighting for structures such as wind turbines, high-voltage transmission lines, telecommunications towers, and other aviation obstacles only when aircraft are detected nearby.

The HARRIER™ ADLS continuously monitors the airspace surrounding wind farms, communication towers, transmission lines, and other facilities requiring obstruction lighting through reliable 360-degree radar surveillance, from ground level to well above normal aircraft operating altitudes. When an aircraft enters the predefined monitoring boundary, the system automatically transmits signals to activate the obstruction lighting.

HARRIER represents one of the most advanced Aircraft Detection Lighting Systems available, meeting the latest regulatory requirements established by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), NAV CANADA, and various European aviation standards. According to the FAA Performance Assessment Report, the HARRIER™ ADLS complies with the performance requirements specified in FAA Advisory Circular AC 70/7460-1M, Chapter 14, and is officially recognized by the FAA.

The HARRIER™ ADLS visual warning system is fully compatible with all major wind turbine platforms, as well as existing control systems, communication networks, and obstruction lighting infrastructures, enabling straightforward integration into both new and existing installations.

The HARRIER™ ADLS collision avoidance system is based on DeTect's proven HARRIER™ Air Surveillance Radar (ASR) technology, originally developed for non-cooperative aircraft detection, unmanned aircraft system (UAS/UAV) detection, and collision avoidance applications. The system provides continuous airspace surveillance and automatically activates obstruction lighting through SCADA integration or direct control interfaces, detecting aircraft at ranges of up to 18 nautical miles (approximately 33 km).

Advanced Features of HARRIER™ ADLS

The HARRIER™ Aircraft Detection Lighting System (ADLS) can be fully customized with multiple detection zones and activation boundaries to meet the specific requirements of each project and operating environment. The system can operate as a stand-alone solution or be integrated with additional sensors and warning devices, including audible alarms, visual warning beacons, and other safety systems.

While typical national aviation standards—such as FAA Advisory Circular AC 70/7460-1M and Transport Canada regulations—require a minimum aircraft detection range of 3 to 4 miles, the HARRIER™ ADLS significantly exceeds these requirements by providing a safety margin of more than 400% above the minimum detection distance. Its highly accurate aircraft speed measurement and direction tracking capabilities also surpass regulatory performance requirements for aircraft detection and lighting activation.

The system continuously records operational data, including aircraft detections, flight paths, lighting activation events, and system status information, within its integrated SQL Database. Combined with customizable automatic reporting, this provides comprehensive documentation to support regulatory compliance, maintenance records, and operational audits.

Using DeTect's MERLIN™ processor extension, a single HARRIER™ ADLS installation can also provide Aircraft Detection Lighting, bird radar monitoring, and drone surveillance from one shared sensor platform, reducing infrastructure costs while expanding operational capability.
