Pressure transmitters are essential instrumentation devices used in industrial process control to convert pressure values into electrical signals. They are commonly available in two types for pressure measurement: Gauge Pressure Transmitters and Absolute Pressure Transmitters.
Gauge Pressure Transmitters
Gauge pressure transmitters calculate the measured pressure relative to a reference pressure, which is typically atmospheric pressure (1 atm). Therefore, they measure pressure as either positive or negative relative to atmospheric pressure. In other words, the measured pressure is expressed as the difference from atmospheric pressure. Gauge pressure transmitters can also measure negative pressure values when the measured pressure is below atmospheric pressure. These transmitters are commonly used for pressure measurement of gases and liquids.
Absolute Pressure Transmitters
Absolute pressure transmitters measure the absolute pressure of the process medium. Absolute pressure is referenced to a perfect vacuum rather than atmospheric pressure. As a result, absolute pressure transmitters always display positive values regardless of atmospheric pressure. These transmitters are commonly used in vacuum applications, altitude measurements above sea level, and closed systems.
Both types of pressure transmitters are widely used in industrial process control, automation, power generation, chemical and petrochemical industries, aerospace, automotive, and many other sectors to provide reliable and accurate pressure measurement. The appropriate transmitter type is selected according to the characteristics of the process and application requirements.
The output signal is a load-independent 4–20 mA DC signal or a PROFIBUS PA or FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus signal that is linearly proportional to the input pressure. Communication is available via the HART protocol, PROFIBUS PA, or FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus interface. Basic transmitter configuration can be easily performed locally using three push buttons.
Benefits
High quality and long service life
High reliability even under extreme chemical and mechanical loads
Comprehensive diagnostic and simulation functions
Minimal conformity error
Low long-term drift
Wetted parts manufactured from high-quality materials (e.g., stainless steel, Hastelloy)
Measurement range from 0.008 bar to 400 bar (0.1 psi to 5802 psi)
High measurement accuracy
Parameter configuration via local control buttons and HART, PROFIBUS PA, and/or FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus
Applications
The pressure transmitter is available in both gauge pressure and absolute pressure versions. The output signal is always a load-independent 4–20 mA DC signal or a PROFIBUS PA or FOUNDATION™ Fieldbus signal that is linearly proportional to the input pressure. The pressure transmitter measures corrosive, non-corrosive, and hazardous gases, vapors, and liquids.
It can be used for the following measurement types:
Gauge Pressure
Absolute Pressure
With appropriate parameter configuration, it can also be used for the following additional measurement applications:
Level
Volume
Mass
The transmitter is available in an intrinsically safe Ex ia version for installation in hazardous areas (Zone 1). The devices are supplied with an EC Type Examination Certificate and comply with the relevant harmonized European ATEX standards.
Gauge Pressure
This version measures the gauge pressure of corrosive, non-corrosive, and hazardous gases, vapors, and liquids.
The minimum measurement range is 0.01 bar (0.15 psi), and the maximum measurement range is 400 bar (5802 psi).
Level Measurement
With appropriate parameter configuration, the gauge pressure version can also measure the level of corrosive, non-corrosive, and hazardous liquids.
For level measurement in an open vessel, a single transmitter is required. For level measurement in a closed vessel, two transmitters and a process control system are required.
Absolute Pressure
This version measures the absolute pressure of corrosive, non-corrosive, and hazardous gases, vapors, and liquids.
The minimum measurement range is 0.008 bara (0.12 psia), and the maximum measurement range is 30 bara (435 psia).
